So.....this hasn't been asked in 6 months, so maybe it's time to hear some new voices -

What are some of the most trance-inducing Estimated Prophets?

A while ago I was listening to some Estimateds from early November '77 - and though that's still the era of relatively concise versions, they were taking me on quite a carpet ride....

The sharp leads come from Jer in 78 and 79. The DP25 rendition is very strong.

I love the late 80's versions as well, where the band just harps on the GCGFC riff

I was going to mention those November shows. They had been playing Estimated all year and it wasn't until November that it became hypnotic. Up to that point they were trying to find the "entry point".

They found it in November.

love this1, all 16 minutes of it. spacey, laid back and extended. its the longest version as far as i know. the show itself was 1 of the longest in the 80s

this is my fav ep, the choice surely being influenced by the fact that i was there

always thought that estimated should have been coupled w/terrapin; e>t, like c>r or s>f

fire,

10/12 is a great version. Doesn't Bob kind of cut Jerry off in that one?

And don't hit stop after the Estimated, the GDTRFB that follows is outstanding. That show has a huge 1st set as well.

this compton '82 rank up there as well "estimated > jam" runs about 17+ minutes....and even though you ditched my Allie, I wasn't stocking you that evening, but I was really pissed over the B.S. you started when you showed up in town again.

There's a chance this is the one you were talking about, LIA. They take it pretty far out before crashing into the other one...

GB- You nailed it with the "crashing" comment. I got it streaming now and The Other One comes in like an alarm clock at 4am. Great stuff!

YES. It scared the sh*t out of me when I first heard it - I don't usually look at setlists while I listen to the concerts, so I didn't know what to expect, and then all of a sudden my head had exploded and liquidized chunks of my brain were dripping from the ceiling of my room.

hey. very new at all this. for my money, i love EP's with extended jamming. those concise versions from most of 77 always leave me craving more. very well played, mostly, but that song just BEGS to be stretched out. check out the EP from 8-16-80. its a bit fast, but man-oh-man. outta this world.

And for what it's worth, Richfield, 9-8-90 (second show with Vince) - awesome eyes> estimated> terrapin, with standard "for the era" clause...

As for the early Nov 77 renditions - Nov 2 is the one imo. The main jam goes according to 77 script (nothing special), but it's the outro jam that works. I'm not a huge fan of 77 EPs or St Stephens, but Jer hits a lot of great notes in the outro, and, while the transition may not be a thing of beauty, the St Steve is the closest thing to 1/22/78 I've heard (DP10 close).

9/3/77, English Town, NJ (AKA DP #15)...is not only trance-inducing, it is my favorite EP, EVER. The 'outro' has the most soulful and interesting Jerry solo I've ever heard for that song, and even Bobby does some cool twanging noises. The vocals are excellent in the 'main section' too...

This is the one I was gonna mention Cueball...you just beat me to it. Had 9/3/77 on tape many moons ago. Had listened to it many times I'm sure. One rainy day I was listening to it in the car with a buddy, while waiting to go into a show. For some reason on this particular day, Estimated really just jumped out at me... Jerry had the wah going something crazy....it really opened my eyes to what a great song it can be. I have heard other great versions but none of them stand out the way that 9/3/77 does....

Yeah, Finster! There's just something about that version, like they open a door and go through it to a different song (almost). And don't you like, just as the jam is kicking in, the very quiet "aaaahs" that Bobby And Donna (and maybe Jerry) are doing? Deliciously mysterious... :)

And the "Eyes" it goes into isn't bad either, although I hate the 'plodding' style the drummers adopted in '77. Two drummers, just to go thud thud thud...

This is a must-listen-to Estimated, IMO....it does have that trance-inducing quality, but what sets it apart is that as you get mesmerized by the jam section, it builds to a second crescendo, and to my knowledge is the only one that actually COMES BACK to the refrain (and then heads into a stellar Terrapin).

Definitely my favorite ESTIMATED and that includes 10/29/77 (which is a nice runner-up):

This one has a great multi-minute jam before going into Eyes.
